For LEGO The Orient Express Train 21344, plan the locomotive, tender, two carriages and track as one long display. Then place the figures and luggage, choose the base construction and decide how you will reach the removable roofs. A case’s outside length answers only part of that task.
Use 21344 as the starting point
The official LEGO 21344 description identifies the locomotive, tender, dining car, sleeping car, track, eight minifigures and baggage cart. Its text gives a model reference of over H12 × L116 × W8 cm. The carriage roofs are removable so the interiors can be viewed.
That reference is not a drawing of every figure arrangement or a promise of operating clearance under a cover. Record the actual train and track you intend to retain, including any extra track or altered grouping. A display for the supplied static model and a layout intended for running trains require different evidence.
Choose the viewing side before fixing the background. If you want to see the carriage interiors regularly, roof access belongs in the initial plan. A printed rear can change the view through the case; it does not establish extra space for removing the roofs or reaching the carriages.
Compare internal space with internal space
| Source | Dimensions as described | Keep unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Wicked Brick Clear case | W122 × D16 × H15.3 cm. | Inside/outside boundary is unlabelled. Track stops and front figure positions need the actual layout. |
| iDisplayit | Inside L120 × W13 × H16 cm; outside L122 × W15 × H17 cm. | Selected acrylic or timber base, finished height and figure/luggage plate position. |
| Flying Box | Case L47 × W6 × H6 in; separate base 47.5 × 6.5 in. | Case boundary is unlabelled. Keep the larger base in the shelf plan. |
| Kingdom Brick Supply | Approx. inside L119.2 × W13.6 × H13.6 cm; outside L120.7 × W15.1 × H14.5 cm. | Complete track/figure arrangement and access; approximate figures are not measured margins. |
| shopPOPdisplays | Approx. external including base W48 × D7 × H8 in; RTA or permanent assembly options. | Selected assembly variant, finished cavity and rear-panel option. |
The table preserves each supplier’s axes and units. In the Wicked Brick listing, width describes the long dimension; other makers label the long direction length. Do not compare only the letter W across suppliers. Likewise, the Flying Box case figures cannot be treated as confirmed interior dimensions simply because another maker labels its own figures “inside.”
Keep the original model reference and each case definition in separate fields. Subtracting LEGO’s “over” length from an approximate case length cannot produce an exact end clearance. Request a labelled finished drawing showing the train, track stops and any front display plate, especially if you plan to change the arrangement.
A base is both a footprint and a construction choice
iDisplayit lists black or white 3 mm acrylic bases and a 19 mm timber option. It also states that all options include a clear plate for the eight figures and luggage. Confirm the finished dimensions for the selected base rather than assuming a thicker timber option shares every vertical datum with an acrylic version.
The selected Wicked Brick clear-case product describes track and train stops, front figure studs, an information plaque and a magnetic two-layer base. Separate printed-background and limited-edition products are linked from the range. Do not assign a different edition’s photographed roof supports or background contents to the clear SKU without confirmation.
Kingdom Brick Supply lists a 148 × 16 stud display area and 18 screws. The stud count describes a locating area, not every unobstructed dimension around panels or accessories. Its handling restriction against moving the case loaded also remains relevant after assembly. The Flying Box base has a separately stated footprint; retain that larger rectangle when checking furniture.

Removing the case and removing a carriage roof are separate actions
First establish how the surround opens. iDisplayit describes a top secured to the surrounding panels, with that assembly lifting from the base. Ask where the long separated surround can be set down and how the lift route clears the shelf above. A lid connection and a removable train roof are different mechanisms.
Next decide how you will reach the carriage interior once the case is open. Will the roof be removed while the train remains on its display track, or will the model be taken to another suitable surface? Do not infer hand access or roof-lift space from a small difference between published heights. Keep those movements separate from the settled outline under the cover.
iDisplayit recommends two-person assembly and a flat supporting surface. Those are assembly conditions, not permission to carry a filled case. Similarly, a flat-packed shipping format describes delivery, not loaded relocation. Obtain the selected product’s assembly and handling instructions before planning a move between rooms.
Send the supplier a complete arrangement to confirm
Make one plan containing the exact 21344 train, track, eight figures, baggage cart, plaque and any retained accessories. Mark which parts are original LEGO and which supports or plates are expected with the display. Request the receiving cavity and whole base footprint with labelled axes, and identify the exact clear, printed, acrylic, timber or assembly variant.
Check that complete base against your shelf using the collection measurement method. For furniture selection, follow the LEGO shelf-case guide rather than treating a narrow train footprint as proof that the case and opening routine fit the location.
Download the 21344 planning worksheet to retain the train/track state, figure plate, base variant, inside and outside dimensions, roof routine, surround route and handling conditions. Save the supplier’s dated answer with the exact product option; keep unresolved dimensions visible.
Common questions
Does the official train length establish the minimum case length?
It is a model reference, not a complete case specification. The actual retained track, stops, supported arrangement, receiving cavity and opening routine still need comparison. “Over” and approximate figures cannot establish a precise clearance.
Can I display the carriage roofs separately?
Only after the selected layout and receiving space are confirmed. Removable roofs in the LEGO model do not mean every case includes roof holders or space for them. Ask about the exact SKU and the complete roof-off arrangement.
